Swimming Calories Calculator

A 70 kg person swimming freestyle at moderate intensity burns about 305 kcal in 30 minutes. Butterfly is the most demanding stroke at roughly 507 kcal in the same time, while a leisurely swim comes to about 220 kcal. Stroke choice changes the number more than speed does.

What is Swimming Calories Calculator?

Swimming works the whole body against water resistance while supporting your weight, which makes it usable for people who cannot tolerate impact exercise.

Technique matters enormously here. An inefficient swimmer burns considerably more energy covering the same distance than a skilled one, so MET estimates are especially approximate in the water.

How to use this calculator

  1. Choose metric (kg) or imperial (lb).
  2. Enter your body weight.
  3. Enter how long you exercised, in minutes.
  4. Select the intensity that best matches your effort — each option shows its MET value.
  5. Read your total burn, the per-minute rate, and the equivalent time walking.
How calories burned are calculated▾

Every activity has a MET value — a metabolic equivalent where 1 MET is the energy you use sitting still. This calculator uses the ACSM metabolic equation, which converts a MET value and your body weight into a calorie burn rate. MET values come from the Compendium of Physical Activities, a standard reference used in exercise research. Pick the intensity that matches what you actually did; the table below shows every option and its MET value.

kcal per minute = MET × 3.5 × body weight (kg) ÷ 200
Total kcal = kcal per minute × duration (minutes)

Frequently asked questions

Which stroke burns the most calories?▾

Butterfly, by a wide margin (MET 13.8), followed by breaststroke. Freestyle is the most efficient stroke, so it burns less for the same distance.

Does cold water change calorie burn?▾

Yes. Cold water raises metabolic cost as your body works to stay warm, though shivering rather than swimming drives most of that extra burn.

How many calories does 30 minutes of laps burn?▾

Around 220 kcal leisurely and up to 360 kcal at vigorous freestyle pace for a 70 kg swimmer.

Why is swimming often said to be bad for weight loss?▾

It can increase appetite afterwards, and cold water reduces the thermic load of exercise. It remains excellent for cardiovascular fitness and joint health.
