Stair Climbing Calories Calculator

A 70 kg person climbing stairs at a moderate pace burns about 294 kcal in 30 minutes, roughly 9.8 kcal per minute — more than double a moderate walk. Stair climbing is one of the most efficient calorie burners available without equipment.

What is Stair Climbing Calories Calculator?

Climbing stairs means lifting your entire body weight against gravity repeatedly, which is metabolically expensive compared with walking on the flat.

It also counts as vigorous activity at modest duration, so short bursts spread through the day — the stairs instead of the lift — genuinely accumulate.

How to use this calculator

  1. Choose metric (kg) or imperial (lb).
  2. Enter your body weight.
  3. Enter how long you exercised, in minutes.
  4. Select the intensity that best matches your effort — each option shows its MET value.
  5. Read your total burn, the per-minute rate, and the equivalent time walking.
How calories burned are calculated▾

Every activity has a MET value — a metabolic equivalent where 1 MET is the energy you use sitting still. This calculator uses the ACSM metabolic equation, which converts a MET value and your body weight into a calorie burn rate. MET values come from the Compendium of Physical Activities, a standard reference used in exercise research. Pick the intensity that matches what you actually did; the table below shows every option and its MET value.

kcal per minute = MET × 3.5 × body weight (kg) ÷ 200
Total kcal = kcal per minute × duration (minutes)

Frequently asked questions

How many calories does climbing one flight burn?▾

For a 70 kg person, roughly 5 kcal per flight of about 12 steps. Small in isolation, but ten flights a day adds up to around 50 kcal.

Is stair climbing good exercise?▾

Yes. It is vigorous-intensity activity that needs no equipment, improves cardiovascular fitness and works the legs and glutes.

Does going down stairs burn calories too?▾

Yes, but far fewer — descending is roughly a third of the cost of ascending because the movement is controlled rather than lifting.

Is it hard on the knees?▾

Ascending is generally well tolerated. Descending places more load on the knee, so people with knee pain often climb up and take the lift down.
